Internet market trends in Central and Eastern Europe in new layout - gemiusRanking refreshed

2009-08-04

Gemius SA has launched new versions of its gemiusRanking web sites, an online resource providing accessible knowledge on the internet in several Central and Eastern European countries. By visiting the gemiusRanking sites, internet users can keep track of the most recent rankings (league tables) concerning such aspects as popularity of browsers or mobile devices used for connecting to the internet. At present, the research data is published for 7 countries, and by the end of the year, we will have launched the new versions of these sites.

The gemiusRanking web sites are dedicated to those interested in the trends prevailing on the Czech (Rankings.cz), Estonian (Rankingee.com), Hungarian (Ranking.hu), Lithuanian (Ranking.lt), Latvian (Ranking.lv), Polish (Ranking.pl), Ukrainian (Ranking.com.ua) internet markets. Visitors who find their way to the web sites will find league tables on the popularity of browsers, operating systems, screen resolution, colour settings, web site directories, search engines, regions and countries from which internet users connect to particular sites in a country, as well as the cookie acceptance rate.

The main changes introduced to the sites are a new way of presenting statistics in the league tables as well as two entirely new metrics: Flash Player versions and mobile devices. Also modified are the names and layout of the gemiusRanking sites.

New look of the gemiusRanking layout (www.ranking.pl)

The data published every week on the gemiusRanking web sites originate from the gemiusTraffic research project supervised by Gemius SA. The gemiusTraffic research study provides information on internet user behaviour on web sites and the technical details of the tools they use.

New data presentation format

The new features, apart from a refreshed layout and colour scheme, include enhanced navigation. The ‘top’ lists concerning technical novelties are available in just a few clicks: you can check how Firefox is struggling with Internet Explorer, if Windows Vista is gaining or losing ground, or whether the iPhone has already conquered all the Central and Eastern European markets. The data available on the sites can also be useful for developers, supplying practical snippets of information on the popularity of new Flash Player versions in a particular region, updates of browsers, screen resolutions and many more technical details.

On the home page of each of the sites you can familiarise yourself with the most recent top 5 rankings for operating systems, web browsers and mobile devices. All ratings are available in the "Ranking" tab or after clicking on the "More statistics" icon. All rankings take the form of charts or tables. The default period is the previous three weeks. Another innovation is the possibility of selecting and comparing data for any 3 weeks, provided that they are not before 1 January 2007.

There has also been a change to the start date of the "ranking week". In the previous version, the "ranking week" commenced on a Tuesday and ended on a Monday. From now on, the seven-day stats will be calculated for the period Monday to Sunday. Due to this modification, results will be published every Wednesday and not, as was before, Thursday.

Another novelty is the way data is presented in the rankings. Details on the minimum conditions which must be met by statistics to be included in a particular rating can be found in the FAQs "What's the value of data presentation threshold?" at gemiusRanking PL.

Exciting developments

Along with the new versions of the web site, Gemius SA launched two new metrics: Flash Player versions and mobile devices employed by internet users connecting to resources in a particular country.

Statistics on mobile devices are now at the centre of attention with iPhones and Blackberries gaining popularity in this part of Europe. What mobile devices are used for surfing the net in particular Central and Eastern Europe countries? Where does Apple dominate with its iPhone? Noteworthy is the fact that out of the seven countries for which the statistics are calculated, Poland comes at the tail end in this respect (13.43% of page views generated by iPhones according to data for 13–19.07.2009). The unquestionable leader is Hungary, where 50.64% of page views from mobile devices were made from iPhones. Latvia follows with 47.07%, then Estonia (36.38%), Lithuania (37.97%), the Czech Rep. (34.32%) and Ukraine (30.77%).

Archival data is still available

Archival data, based on the number of visitors, for the period between 2001-2007, is made available for internet users at Old.rankings.cz, Old.rankingee.com, Old.rankins.hu, Old.ranking.lt, Old.ranking.lv, Old.ranking.pl and Old.ranking.com.ua. The data archived from January 2007, based on the number of page views, can be sorted by specifying any week in the tables of the present gemiusRanking sites.

The statistics published on gemiusRanking may be downloaded in XML format. For  more details concerning the most recent changes, go to the Methodology tab and the FAQ section of the gemiusRanking PL (Ranking.pl) web site.
